He was one of the first Africans to be nominated as on the FIFA World Player of the Year. He was named the France Football Magazine African Player of the Year Award three times and was the winner of the BBC African Sports Star of the Year Award in the year 1992. He also won the Confederation of African Footballer Award twice and in the 1992 African Cup of Nations , he was given the golden ball award for being the best player at the tournament .
