In the Opening match of 1978 World Cup competitions, Lacombe ensured the edition opened with an immediate bang when he headed home from Didier Six‘s cross to put France ahead against their great rivals Italy .France had not beaten the Azzurri since 1920 and despite the hope Bernard’s goal gave the French ,they lost to Italy 2-1 with Italy goals coming from Rossi and Zaccarelli in the 29th and 54th minutes respectively.
