10. TARDIGRADES – ability to survive in extreme physical and chemical conditions
They are very tiny aquatic organisms. The most amazing thing about Tardigrades is the ability to survive in extreme physical and chemical conditions that would be fatal for other living things. They can survive temperatures from -200 to temperatures above boiling water. They can withstand very high doses of ionizing radiation and extreme pressure much higher than the pressure of the deep ocean trenches. Tardigrades can go without food or water for very many years actually more than ten years. Though aquatic, when faced with extreme conditions, they are able to dry out to body moistures of below 3% replacing the body water with sugar and only to revert back to normal life after rehydration. They are also capable of surviving the vacuum of space.
9. TURRITOPSIS NUTRICULA
A species of the jellyfish also known as the immortal jellyfish. Yes, the organism shows a form of immortality! If a grown mature Turritopsis is threatened by starvation, it attaches to the surface at the bottom in the warm waters of the ocean and transform into a blob. During this state, the cells transdifferentiate and transform into different cell types. Muscle cells can transform into eggs or sperm and nerve cell can transform into muscle cells. During this transformation, the animal having fully grown reverts to colonial sexual immature state which is the polyp state. Free swimming Jellyfish which is the medusa state bud off from the poly and grow to sexual maturity. Though considered immortal, they can actually die if predated upon or diseased. They regenerate only after sexual maturity.
8. THE PISTOL SHRIMP
The pistol shrimp is unique for it extraordinarily non-proportional large claw. This claw is greater than half the body size of the shrimp and can be on either side of the body. Unique about this claw is the fact that it does not have pincers like in most shrimp species. The claw has piston-like features composed of two parts; hammer part and a jointed part that allows back and forth movement of the hammer. When the claw snaps shut, it fires a large and powerful cavitation bubble. This is used for defense and stunning prey. A loud snapping sound is also heard while snapping. As the cavitation bubble disintegrates, it can reach temperatures as high as those of the sun.
7. THE HUMMINGBIRD
The brightly colored hummingbirds are among the smallest birds known with majority of species ranging between 7.5 – 13cm in size and weigh less than 2.5g. They derive their name from the humming sound produced when they flap their wings at very high frequencies of about 50 flaps per second and at times as high as 200 flaps per second. This makes them the fastest birds flying at high speeds beyond 54 km/h. Hummingbirds can fly up, down, left, right, backwards and even upside down. They have the unique ability to over still in the air by flapping their wings in a figure-8 pattern. These birds have an extra long tongue that allows them to lick nectar at fast rate of 13 licks per second.
6. THE MIMIC OCTOPUS
This amazing specie of octopus is endowed with a very unique ability to impersonating another sea organism for hunting and security purpose. The octopus posses pigment sacs chromatophores that enable it to change color to blend with that of its immediate environment. The mimic octopus is able to take the shape of various objects and animals, and the number of animals it can mimic is diverse compared to any other creature with the same capability.
5. THE HAIRY FROG
The hairy frog commonly found in central Africa derives its name from hair-like structures that develop along the flanks and thighs of the breeding males. It has a peculiar defense mechanism. They have retractable claw that are bony as opposed to the normal keratin claws. When threatened the bony claws are projected out breaking through the skin and breaking the finger tip. The frogs flesh later heals after the claws retract back.
4. MANTIS SHRIMP
The Mantis shrimp strike using their claws and can cause serious damage on victims even greater than their own size. The force of impact of the striking claw on the striking surface can be as high as 1500 Newton. Their elaborate visual system makes them great hunters.
3. THE PINK DRAGON MILLIPEDE
The pink dragon inhabits the open in on leaf litter and derives its name from its pink color. The millipede defends itself by producing Hydrogen cyanide from in its glands. The bad odor of the hydrogen cyanide keeps its potential enemies away.
2. THE SEA CUCUMBER
The amazing feature of this sedentary creature is the ability to transform its body form into liquid in and back to solid when squeezing through small spaces. For defense purpose, the sea cucumber ejects sticky tubules or filaments to entangle its enemy. This is accompanied by the release of toxins called holothurin. Holothurin has similar properties to soap and can be fatal killing animals within the Sea cucumber’s environs. When the temperature of the waters beyond optimum, the Sea cucumber is able to undergo a period of metabolic dormancy called aestivation. During this period the animal stops feeding and becomes emaciated until the conditions revert back to normal.
1. BIRD FLEA
These commonly infect birds and their nests. Among the fleas the bird flea is known to jump the longest distance. They can jump 150 times their body height and 200 times their body length.
