After finishing 17th the previous season not many expected Everton to finish fourth the coming season. Before the start of the 2004-2005 season, Everton sold Wayne Rooney to Manchester United and no one would predict the outcome of the new season for the Tofees considering their finish in the 2003-2004 season as they narrowly avoided being relegated to the Championship. The new season finished with Everton qualifying for a Champions League spot as they finished fourth, which was their best finish ever in the Premier League all thanks to the veteran Tim Cahil and now Arsenal captain Mikel Arteta.
